Hi to all from class of 1969 Brian Mc Donagh <MBJSMC@AOL.COM> Alsace France Hi, Greetings and Salutations to all at Summerhill College. It's wonderful to see such a generous past pupil as Mr Gilmartin donating space to his Alma Mater. I only wish that I had as much money as him and I would send some back to the school. leaving=1984 Maurice Fitzgerald <mf@onepeatwo.ie> Ireland Hi, hello to kevin early and austie o callaghan, still have fond memories of summerhill, keep up the good work. leaving=1981 eugene leonard <e_mleonard@hotmail.com.au > sydney australia Hi, Hello to all from Summerhill, Past and Present. Mr.s Gannon and Kilkoyne plus one other that I have forgotten. What is/has been happening? I would like to know if there are any year books available from any of the years I attended? I would also like to know what happened to techers like Tommy Mc Manus, Colm Gannon, "Sam" Howley, Mick Kilcoyne and Cool John Mcloughlin! Always wondered if our class is ever going to have a reunion. Maybe at the 15 year mark fellas!Just as a matter of interest who runs the 100m fatest at the college these days and what's his time? Anyway campers I've gotta go shams. Hope to hear from someone/anyone soon. Cheers, Neil Sweeney (IG) Neil Sweeney <Neil.Sweeney.330109@army.defence.gov.au> Puckapunyal, Victoria Australia - 06/05/1998 What ever happened to Ned the caretaker. He was in the college for years.I remember him giving my brother a kick in the arse for throwing snowballs one Christmas. He was a good man to put up with all the abuse and distasteful comments which were targeted at him on a daily basis. God bless you Ned. What has happened toBig Brendan Duggan, I hope he is doing well. Contrary to popular public beliefhe was a damn good teacher who should have been shown more respect. I also remember Fr. Green beat three students with a stick, in the corridor, out side the main office. I was a first year, still very impressional, yet subjected to such barbaric scenes. I saw a teacher kick a student and I must add, from first hand experience, being hit on the head with the sharp side of a ruler isless the pleasurable. My best friend was expelled for his wrong doings and castfrom the cradle of Summer Hill without the one thing that we go there to seek: education. The powers to be threw him out on to the streets with no leaving cert,no future, no pride. Just another body on the scrap heap of "problem students" My friend was far from an Angel and his actions and attitude left alot to be desired. He was a pain in the arse, a teachers nightmare, but most of all he was a student who required more attention and support than the other 'less disturbed' students inorder to succeed. The bin man should not complain about the odour from the garbage, that is his chosen job. Therefore, a teacher should not complain about the attitude of his/her students, rather they should help improve the learning atmosphere and regard the studentsas pprospects for the future. I may sound bitter, but that is untrue. I actually enjoyed thelazy, hazy days of secondary school and the advantages of not having to be self sufficient. I do not think that teachers should have to be subjected to endless abuse and constant threat but I do believe that teachers should be more focused on the power that they possess over the livesof our youth. The future of this country depends on teenagers and youthful, playful kids who will one day run this country. Irish children are shown enough violence every day on television due to the conflict NI, lets not show them the same actions in our schools. The formative years are very important,we must realize that teenager are going through vital changes in body and mind which must be respected and nurtured.I admire anybody who can stand at the head of a class and control the attention of 30 teenagers, just be aware teachers, that these kids depend on you for guidance and sympathy througout stormy times. I remember Fr. Moore telling us in english class one day that on the law of averages at least one member of our class would be dead in 5 years.Either that was to shut us up by getting us to think about our own mortality orhe was been serious. Either way, I think we have passed that milestone. (I'll probably be hit by a bus later though.) I have always meant to do it in personand some day I might get around to it but I would like to thank all thoseteachers who put in the time and put up with the extra hassle. Among the facesthat come to mind I would just like to say that i really appreciate everything(not necessarily the subject concerned)I learned from the teachers I had for T.D.,physics, chemistry, maths, german and english. Ye should know who ye are! Oh andcheers Peadar. Im currently working for Oracle (databases) in Dublin, though Im hoping to change the location soon. Before I go, for all those people who have nothing but bad memories of Summerhill, and feel the need to tell everyoneabout it, you have to be able to take the good with the bad and if you didn't take that with you from 'Da Hill' then i feel sorry for you. Sure things couldhave been tough at times but you don't appeared to have learned from it. In fact all you appear to have learned is to bitch and moan. Save it for your therapist! Get over it.Nice site.
