| It was with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Mrs. Sybil Higgins which took place at Nazereth House on Saturday December 6th 1997. Mrs. Higgins has been associated with the college and its swimming pool for over 40 years. During the 1950s she was responsible for the college life saving team which on quite a number of occasions won All Ireland honours. In subsequent years she was attached to the college staff teaching swimming to generations of students and coaching the college swimming team.She will be remembered as a person totally dedicated to her profession and as one who brought to her work a standard of excellence. She was also associated with the productions of musicals in the college during the 70s and 80s. She was for many years a teacher of ballet in Sligo and throughout the Midlands and brought her expertise of this area to play in choreographing t he college musicals.We in Summerhill have been fortunate to have had available to us the dedication of such a talented and professional educator, Summerhill and Sligo are deeply in her debt. We will remember her with much affection. May she rest in peace. David Gilmartin adds : I remember Mrs Higgins with a great sence of pride she was indeed one person who you could look up to. She was decent and kind and when ever I used to think about going back to Sligo she was the one person I always intend to visit but never did. I think I have learn't my lesson. | |
