I also believe that some crossed the pond to the States many years ago. Dear All, Within the Ardcarn Parish register in (northern) County Roscommon, Ireland, my gg-grandfather appeared as James Kilmartin (in his 1844 marriage record to wife Mary Dignan), as James Martin (in the 1845 baptismal record of daughter Bridget), and as James Gilmartin (in the 1850 baptismal record of daughter Catherine). We are clearly of the Mac Giolla Mhartain line Gilmartin/Kilmartin/Martin. James Martin (born circa 1825), wife Mary Dignan, and their family emigrated to East Lothian County (then Haddingtonshire), Scotland, around 1850 with their descendents eventually emigrating to America by 1913. In James' 1882 Scots death certificate, his parents were listed as Patrick Martin (born circa 1805) & Catherine Pow. This Patrick was likely known as Patrick Gilmartin and/or Patrick Kilmartin way back when in old Ireland. Ring any bells with anyone? All helpfull information welcomed. Best regards, Bill

I did not know there were so many GILMARTINS! Our family came from Ireland in the late 1800's and settled in Paterson,NJ to work. My grandfather and his family (brothers) worked in the printing business. His name was Edward, and he had a brother Joseph. I have to ask my dad about the other names of his brothers.

Hi to all the Gilmartins out there wherever you might be! I don't know much about our ancestry yet, but i intend to find out more. I'll keep you all up to date, for anyone who thinks we might be related! My name is Sian Gilmartin (22), we live in Ayshire, Scotland. My grandfather (Joseph Gilmartin) came from county Mayo to Yorkshire when he was a young man, and his brothers went off to America to find work. As so many did in those days, they lost touch. It would be wonderfull for him, and all of us if i could find out more about his family. I'll post more info soon, so please get in touch if it sounds familiar.

This has nothing to do with Gilmartin, it's a lot more important than that. It's a matter of life and death. So please, read this. The UN has postponed its withdrawal from it's last compound in East Timor by 24 hours. Inside this camp are sheltering a large number of East Timorese. Many, many East Timorese have been slaughtered before and since their independence referendum. The slaughter is being carried out by Pro-Jakarta militia forces while the Indonesian police and army do nothing to stop them. Why would they? The militia are on their side! The UN has never officially recognised Indonesia's claim over East Timor, yet it now proposes to retreat from the area, abandoning the East Timorese people yet again. They are currently in talks to get Indonesian president BJ Habibe's permission to enter the area, though they never accepted his authority in the region anyway! It makes no sense to wait for the agressors to invite them in! Did the UN ask Saddam Hussein's permission before moving in to protect the Kurds?? If you live in the US, please be aware that the feeling here in Ireland is that most of the UN is prepared to move on this, but that such is the state of World Politics, that no-one can realistically do it without US approval. So please, please, lobby your congresspeople and senators to bless UN intervention in this. If you live in the UK, please ask your MP if licencing weapon sales to Indonesia, and inviting them to arms exhibitions is helping the situation. Wherever you are, please, please contact your elected representatives to demand that the UN send in a peacekeeping force before the rest of this population is slaughtered. To find out more, please check the following (or any) news sources http://www.rte.ie/news/1999/0909/easttimor.html http://www.cnn.com/ASIANOW/southeast/9909/09/e.timor.02/ http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/asia-pacific/newsid_442000/442462.stm http://www.foxnews.com/world/090899/easttimor.sml Again, I know this has nothing to do with VR or the Web, but I could never forgive myself if I didn't do all I could to raise awareness of this issue. Some things are just too important. Please, we must all keep the pressure on to save these people. Thanks for your time and space!, Jack

Hello, this is the real Anne Gilmartin. My brother Thomas submitted the previous message without my knowledge. I don't know anyone by the name of Dugdale. I do live in Cork (unfortunately with my brother - who happens to use my internet connection too much!!!). I do not like any of the bands mentioned and detest cheese and wine parties. My brother, as you can tell, is extremely immature and is a typical University student - rubbish sense of humour and doesn't wash enough! I'm glad to say that I will be moving away from him in the very near future (not soon enough in my opinion!).

Hi everyone, my husband Brian and I went to St. Croix last month and stayed at the Carambola Beach Resort. The resort and the island are fantastic! We are sad that Sunterra is selling time shares at the Carambola because we would love to go back sometime in the future and hope it doesn't "sell out". The staff and the grounds were excellent and the island was beautiful. We have posted pictures from our trip at http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Salon/2191/index.html I hope you enjoy the pictures and please email me with any questions about St. Croix. Greetings from Damien Gilmartin. I am a Chartered Surveyor living in Chadderton just north of Manchester, England. I have traced my male lineage (with some difficulty) back to Boyle, Co. Roscommon in the 1830's. Until recent years, the family has lived in or been associated with the Newton Heath area of Manchester. I would be pleased to receive any connective information or to provide any fuller details on the following synopsis. Son of: James Gilmartin 1907-1986 (siblings Winifred, Thomas & Eliza) who was son of: James Gilmartin 1881-1960 (sibling Thomas) who was son of: James Gil(l)martin 1840/41-after 1901 a soldier (known sibling Patrick plus probably Bernard, Mary & others) who was son of: Thomas Gil(l)martin about 1821-before 1888 All researched birth places prior to 1840 are recorded as Ireland or Roscommon and the earliest birthdate in Manchester is 1840. I have also come across other possible related names in the Manchester area in the 1800's ie Mary, Margaret, John & Lawrance. I have also logged all Gilmartin marriages in England with Registry references between 1840 & 1907.

Greetings to all the Gilmartins. My name is Chris Gilmartin, son of Robert M. Gilmartin and Gilda T.Gilmartin (pronounced JILl-da). I am 22 years old, and am currently living in Bloomington, Indiana. I grew up in Midland Park, New Jersey, just outside New York City. I have an older brother, Robert (25), and a younger sister, Michele (19). I noticed that there were so many inquiries regarding our family members (and where they've all disappeared to), that it thought I'd let you know where my branch of the family is coming from -- perhaps I can shed some light on SOMEONE's situation. I'm somewhat embarassed because I don't really know much about the Irish side of my family -- the Italian side has kept much more detailed records ouf the family's history. My father was raised, Roman Catholic, in Scranton, Penn, which was founded as a coal mining town for Irish immigrants. His father, Michael Gilmartin, began working in the mines when he was a young boy, and continued to do so into his adulthood. He later became a police officer, and remained on the force until his death. I, unfortunately, never know my grandfather, as he died when my father was only 16 years of age. My grandfater was known as Mickey by his friends and family. I know that he had brothers and sisters, however the only name I can recall is John Gilmartin. John was a minor league baseball player till WWII. He joined the army and fought in Europe during the war. Afterwards, he returned to the states and was the propritor of a bar in Scranton ("TEX GILMARTIN'S") -- "Tex" was John's nickname. My Grandfather married Marry Grippi (Italian), and had three children: MaryAnn, Robert, and Michael, Jr. MaryAnn still lives in Scranton with her husband Jerry Jacquinot. They have four children: Michelle, Anne, MaryAlice, and Gerard. Michael, Jr. also remained in Penn, has marriend twice, and currently lives with his second wife Nada. THey have one daughter, Katie (20).I'm afraid that's really all the information I can think of right now. I know that my Aunt MaryAnn and Uncle Jerry know a good deal more about the family's history (they travel to Ireland, often). I believe we still have relatives there, however I don't know any of them personally. Oh, I did forget one other thing .From what I'm told, one or two of Mickey Gilmartin's brothers went off to Chicago, and became police officers. So, I figure there is an entire group of distant cousins living up there, somewhere. When I asked my father about it, he recalled one of his Uncles' sons who had become a police detective. The detectives name was Edward "Neddy" Gilmartin. Does anybody know of him?Ans so, that's all for now, I suppose. I'll be sure to write back if I discover anything else about the family. And please contact me if any of this rings a bell. My e-mail is cgilmart@indiana.edu. I'm just about to finish school at Indiana University, and afterwards I may move to Chicago. My brother and I will be tracing our family through Ireland and Italy this summer, so any-and-all clues to our past would be appreciated. My best to all!Chris Gilmartin

Hello there from Canada. My name is Paul Gilmartin and I am looking tofind something of my family history. I wonder if you could offer anyadvice on finding more about the Gilmartin Clan. Although the WWW is awonderful tool, there are so many pages contained that it is difficultto find just the right pages with the right information, as you may wellimagine. The main reasons for my search into my family is first myparents are getting along in age, my father will be 75 this year andmost of the family has died off. Of six in his family there is buthimself and his sister also in her 70's still alive. There have been 2deaths in the past 3 years. The second reason is the birth of my sonConor Kieran (great Irish names eh ??) He is 14, almost 15 months oldnow and would like very much, as he get older to know about his father'sside of the family. I would thanks you so much in advance to replyingat your earliest convience. I am sure that you get quite a number ofletters every day with a web site such as this. Good-bye for now. Hopeto hear from you soon.Yours trulyPaul G. Gilmartin

I am researching the family of John Gilmartin of County Leitrim. John marriedMary McTernan and they had three children all born in County Leitrim.Bridget, 1840 and Patrick and Peter both in 1847 (twins perhaps). The familyleft Ireland circa 1867and came to the United States and settled in New Orleans where they remaineduntil their deaths. I am seeking information regarding their lives in Ireland and with only thename of the County and not the Townland or Village I have reached a dead end.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Ankajo @AOL.com
